6th & 7th Grade –
Students met in the gym for part of the period with Mrs. Kahn to encourage students to continue to work hard and behave positively for the final trimester of the year. The other part took place in homeroom where students discussed their current year and any concerns they have about this year or next in a Town Hall style conversation. Some of the topics discussed during the Town Hall conversations included: handling stress, homework/grades, self-advocating, school safety.
8th Grade –
Students from Vernon Hills High School provided skits to students about what life is like in High School.

Students testing

We want to ensure that all students experience a positive transition to high school! As one step in providing MHS with the information needed to make well-informed placement decisions for all incoming students, all 8th grade students will take the STAR exam at Mundelein High School on Saturday November 11thThe STAR assessment is an online test that provides timely feedback on students’ literacy and math skills.  STAR assessments are computer-adaptive, which means the difficulty level of each test is adjusted as students move through the assessment. The STAR test results will serve as one data point among many in the placement process.  Mundelein High School will also consider students’ fall mathematics and reading MAP scores, other standardized tests administered at the middle school level, past course achievement, and eighth grade teacher recommendations. Thank you for your participation in this process!  For more information please contact Jamie DiCarlo ( or Kim Goldberg (

Dear Parents/Guardians,
The school year is off to a wonderful start.  We have enjoyed seeing the students back at Middle School South.  We are looking forward to seeing you on Thursday, September 15, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. sharp to 8:00 p.m.  We have planned an evening to include a curriculum overview and opportunity to meet your student’s teachers.  In preparation for this event, we strongly encourage you to come with a copy of your student’s schedule.  We have attached a schedule for Curriculum Night here. Please review the schedule to plan your evening.  Additionally, we will be offering a survey in the Resource Center for you to share your experience.  We value your input and we hope you will set aside a few moments to complete this short survey.

Middle South had their first Advisory for the year on Friday, September 2nd.  Students spent extra time in their homerooms playing icebreaker games to set the stage for greater relationship building.  Congratulations to 6th grade for winning the first color wars competition! Each team also picked their team names for the year.  Advisory is off to a great community-building start!
