We are excited to announce that Hawthorn Middle School South has been approved as a new site for Girls on the Run/Heart & Sole.  “GOTR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.”  Meetings will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays this fall, beginning Tuesday, September 11 for 10 weeks, from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m.  Late bus transportation will be available, but families do need to sign up in order for their student to ride the late bus.  During each meeting, we will teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games.  The evidence-based curriculum is taught by certified coaches and includes three parts:  understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork, and understanding how we connect with and shape the world.
Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment.  Important social, psychological and physical skills and abilities are developed and reinforced throughout the program.  At the end of the season, the girls and their running buddies complete a 5K running event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals.  The result is making the seemingly impossible – possible, and teaching the girls that they can do whatever they want to do.
Heart & Sole is specifically designed for middle school girls.  The program creates a positive, structured space for the girls to learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy, strengthen connections and develop life skills that will help them as they move through adolescence and beyond.  This program is accessible to all girls regardless of athletic ability or fitness level and considers the range of ages and varied experiences of middle schoolers.  Physical activity includes strength and conditioning appropriate for this age group.  Our 5K will take place on Saturday, November 17 in Chicago.  Round trip bus transportation will be available from school that day.
We have a wonderful coaching staff volunteering this fall:  Mrs. Becker, Mrs. Byrne, Ms. Howell, Mrs. Foley, Mrs. Moravek, and Ms. Reese.  We are all excited to get started!  Registration for this program is only offered directly through the GOTR office or website @ There is a program fee of $155 per girl.  However, a reduced fee is available, based on need.  Should you have any questions, please contact April Foley at
