The ten students in the “Girls on the Run” program at Middle School South are working to meet their goals in several ways. On one hand, they are preparing to participate in a 5K in Chicago on Nov. 23. In preparation, they are running together twice a week. On the other hand, they are learning social skills, gaining new friends and developing confidence through fun activities, which is also a focus of the program.
“Due to the program, I feel less lonely,” said one student. “It has helped me socially. I have gotten to know more people and I am less shy.”
Girls on the Run inspires girls to recognize their inner strengths. Coaches lead small teams through research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the ten-week program, participants develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with a celebratory event in which Girls on the Run teams throughout the Chicago area come together for a 5K.
