The purpose of this event is to help close the gender gap in STEM fields by exposing middle school girls to different technical careers. Girls can explore computer science in a constructive learning environment, and learn about the day to day life of STEM professionals. Last year, our guest speakers were Ms. Janice Kapinos, the Vice President of IT from Rust-Oleum, as well as Ms. Lavanya Iyer who is a Vernon Hills High School Alumn. Accompanying Ms. Kapinos was Ms. Lakshmi Thota who is a SAP professional. They spoke about their experiences as women in STEM and how they overcame many difficulties in their professions. Girls can also participate in activities like coding mobile applications, and making their own programs for a small robot. Mr. Lueken also provides information on High School CS Courses to the eighth graders. This event is free to attend, and all girls will receive free swag. Dinner will be served to all attendees.
